Literature Text

The three of us, Lola, the stranger and I, sat in the midst of an awkward silence for a while. The boy in the greatcoat happily consumed the tea and biscuits we had provided him with. Lola shifted uncomfortably on the sofa beside me. I looked at her and released, with a sharp twinge of annoyance that, whilst the stranger knew both my name and that of my sister, we were yet to learn anything about him.
I cleared my throat but, before I could so much as open my mouth to speak, the boy grinned and wiped the crumbs from his mouth. "Zane." He announced.
"What?" inquired Lola. Good, I thought, at least it's only this Zane character who knows what I'm thinking. My innermost feelings are not in the public domain, as it were.
Zane smiled, "Good one. Don't worry it's not just you, I do that with everyone."
"Oh and I was beginning to feel special," I replied dryly
"Sorry, Lola," He said, ignoring me, "Now, now, don't you think you're being a little harsh on your sister?" Lola blushed at Zane's verbal acknowledgement at her thoughts, I raised an eyebrow at him, "She can't do this sort of thing all the time, one seldom comes across a mind reader." He continued, his grin widening.
"And certainly not such a show-off as yourself," I retorted, trying to emulate his way of speaking. I sounded stupid.
He laughed "Not that stupid – though fairly so..."
"Hey! You owe us an explanation, remember?" He stopped laughing, "I suggest you stop showing off or you'll find yourself with no-one to explain to."
"Well fine then..." Zane took a sharp breath, "If I'm being totally honest I don't believe that anyone knows the true story. But I know the most. Girls, really, I could do without those sort of thoughts! Anyway – you'll surely have noticed... well, shall we say 'strange goings on'?"
"Strange goings on? Like what?" asked Lola
Like reversing blindness and seeing the future and, I touched my arm, where a pink scar was fading, speed-healing...
"Ah, well done Lucy!" Zane applauded, "Lola, your little sister knows what's going on... as do you, really."
Lola nodded, looking almost... sad.
"Lucy you should know I really do not approve of that little incident with the kitchen knife. It really must have made an awful mess. No! I really don't want to see the images thanks!"
"You were explaining?" I growled.
"Oh yes, of course, your thoughts keep sidetracking me, you really are fascinating –"
"Get on with it!" Lola practically yelled.
"Well basically, the three of us are special, as it were... I've found quite a few teenagers who, like ourselves, have got ... interesting skills..."
"Go on..."  Lola prompted, more gently than before. I listened in silence, my attention captured for the foreseeable future.
"Even within our select group, you, Lucy, appear to be quite unique. You see all our powers seem to be related to either predicting or controlling things with our minds. Lucy's is the only one that manifests itself physically."
I'm pretty sure Lola and I both looked a little shocked. He paused. Looked around. "I best be leaving now, I'll explain more at a later date. Here's my number," he handed me a business card, "I'll call sometime."
He called me six days later.
I cannot even begin to explain how embarassing this is
